[ARCHIVED] Frisco General Election moved to Nov. 3; Candidate filings remain valid, will not be reopened

(March 27, 2020) Frisco’s general election scheduled for May will be postponed until November due to uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, coronavirus.

This evening during a Special Called Meeting, the Frisco City Council voted unanimously to move the May 2 General Election to elect three council members (Mayor, plus Places 5 and 6) to November 3, 2020.  Candidate filings will remain valid and will not be reopened for the November election.

Earlier this month, Governor Greg Abbott suspended provisions of the Texas Election Code allowing cities to move their elections.

The postponement means the new, voter registration deadline will  be October 5.  Early voting will start October 19 and run through October 30.

“With early voting just a few weeks away under the original schedule, our City Council felt it was best to postpone our election so voters have enough time to meet the candidates and make informed decisions,” said Mayor Jeff Cheney. “We also don’t want voters or election volunteers to be worried about social distancing at the polls.  We made our decision to move the election with our residents’ health, welfare and safety in mind.”

Also tonight, the Frisco City Council amended its ordinance that extends Mayor Cheney’s public health emergency declaration to include a mandatory stay-at-home order, essential businesses definitions and an enforcement clause. Frisco’s ordinance models the Denton County stay-at-home order.

The amended ordinance takes effect today and expires April 8, 2020 unless extended by the Frisco City Council.
