[ARCHIVED] Frisco PD Partners with Local Boy Scout to Help Deaf Drivers

Deaf Placard Front and Back

The Frisco Police Department is partnering with local Boy Scout Jack Musser to bridge the gap between police officers and deaf drivers in the community. Jack, a 16-year-old Reedy High School student and Boy Scout, is a deaf driver. For his Eagle Scout project, Jack designed a placard for drivers to show police during traffic stops alerting officers that they are deaf. The placard also provides an area for personalization where the driver can note anything specific to their situation (i.e. the ability to read lips, cochlear implants, etc.).

Prior to launching the program, Jack assisted in training Frisco PD patrol officers by introducing the placard and answering questions related to deaf drivers. He has since started distributing them within the deaf community in Plano and Frisco. The placards will also be available to pick up in the main lobby of the Frisco Police Department.

Frisco Police Chief John Bruce, an Eagle Scout himself, said “Scouting is a great organization that teaches young men life skills to include service to others. This project is a great example of service to others and our department is proud to be a part of it.”

While the placard is not a new idea, with other cities throughout the U.S. managing similar programs, it is new to this area. Jack hopes to partner with neighboring police agencies soon and bring this program to several other north Texas cities.
