[ARCHIVED] TWO PARKS RENAMED TO HONOR LONG-TIME FRISCO FAMILIES

(MARCH 3, 2021) The Frisco City Council has approved the renaming of two parks that recognize two African American families with strong, long-lasting contributions to the Frisco community.

First Street Park at 8541 First St. is now Jack Hamilton Park, named after the pastor who founded Frisco’s first African American church in 1914, now known as Hamilton Chapel Baptist Church at the corner of Ash and Frist streets, a stone’s throw from the park location. The existing park built in 1982, is designated for reinvestment by the city to include a new design and park amenities. Construction to refurbish Jack Hamilton Park is expected to begin this spring.

The undeveloped 2.8-acre Persimmon Park site behind City Hall south of Page Street will be renamed Jimmy and Clara Jones Park. The Joneses have been respected stalwarts of the Frisco community for decades. They are active members of Hamilton Chapel Baptist Church created by Jimmy’s great uncle, Jack Hamilton, the new namesake of nearby First Street Park.

The design for Jimmy and Clara Jones Park will be multifunctional due to its location near not only apartments and homes, but businesses, the public library and city hall. Amenities may include an amphitheater, meandering paths, and electrical outlets and Wi-Fi to keep the urban community connected. Proposed landscaping will be inspired by our North Texas Blackland ecoregion. Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2021.
