Common Threads: Kwanzaa

Saturday, December 30, 2023

Kwanzaa, the Swahili word for 'First Fruits,' is the name given to the annual observance developed by Maulana Karenga and celebrated by many African Americans since 1966. Kwanzaa begins on December 26 each year. Each day includes a commitment to one of seven principles.
Umoja - Unity
Kujichagulia - Self-Determination
Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility
Ujamaa - Cooperative Economics
Nia - Purpose
Kuumba - Creativity
Imani - Faith
In this come and go event in the visitor’s center, learn about Kwanzaa and make a bracelet to symbolize Kwanzaa’s seven principles
