Northwest Community Park BioBlitz

Friday, August 5, 2022

Explore one of Frisco's natural areas and participate in a BioBlitz at the future site of Northwest Community Park!

WHAT IS A BIOBLITZ?
A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity.
Smartphone technologies and apps such as iNaturalist make collecting photographs and biological information about living things easy as part of a BioBlitz. High quality data uploaded to iNaturalist become part of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, an open source database used by scientists and policy makers around the world.
WHERE IS THIS EVENT?
Participants will be contributing to the collection of biodiversity data at the future location of Northwest Community Park, which is currently an undeveloped landscape. Meet at the Dorba Trail gravel parking area on the east side of Teel, directly across from Stafford Middle School near the corner of Teel and Little River Drive or about 1/2 mile north of Panther Creek Pkwy. The event will begin with a brief tutorial for the iNaturalist app followed by an undeveloped trail walk lasting approximately 2 hours.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Due to the extremely rugged terrain of this green space, participants must be 14 and older. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required.
Wear outdoor clothing and footwear that’s best for trekking through the Texas wilderness. Pants, longsleeves, bug spray, sunscreen, and waterproof footwear are recommended. Bring water and snacks too!
