2011 Landscape Water Use Letter

Beginning this March, Frisco staff sent letters to customers with unusally high outdoor water use. The letter is part of the City's effort to help customers reduce their potential outdoor water waste and increase their water use efficiency in 2012.

Using metered water usage and geographical landscape information, staff estimated the number of inches residential water customers used on their property. Staff compared that usage with the city’s weekly watering recommendations for 2011. About 11.5 inches of water were needed to supplement the 27 inches of rainfall last year.

Residents that receive the letter are encouraged to sign up for a FREE sprinkler system checkup and to sign up to receive Frisco’s WaterWise Emails with weekly lawn watering advice.

Water Supply Update, Restrictions, and Zebra Mussels in Lake Texoma

While grateful for the rain, it is important to note that due to the Zebra Mussel infestation, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) still cannot pump from Lake Texoma which normally provides 28% of the total water supply for the district.

The district’s Stage 3 restrictions will remain in effect. Frisco will continue offering weekly watering recommendations based on the city’s weather station and local rainfall data.

Officials with NTMWD are monitoring the inflow of rain runoff into Lakes Lavon and Jim Chapman, water supplies utilized by the district. The district will also review short-term forecasts and other data to determine if the current water management measures can be relaxed while still planning for the long-term needs of its consumers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which manages the water level of Lavon Lake, will release water as needed based on long standing flood control procedures. Releases will not occur when levels return to the normal conservation pool of 492 feet msl.

Frisco’s Stage 3 restrictions limit landscape watering at each service address to once every seven days (if necessary) based on location within the residential trash collection zones. Non-residential customer watering days are based on location within the residential trash collection day zone. Outdoor watering with a sprinkler system is not allowed between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time.

Beginning with Daylight Saving Time (DST) on Sunday, March 11, 2012, outdoor watering with a sprinkler system is not allowed between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. These watering times were adopted to reduce water waste during the heat of the day due to evaporation and high winds. The 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. hours help to offset the demand for indoor water use when residents are preparing for work and school.

Water with a hand-held hose for your trees and shrubs and use soaker hoses around the foundation are allowed for no more than two hours a day.
