| The Frisco Fire Department prepares every day for emergencies that may threaten our community. However, in the event of a major disaster, the number -- and type -- of calls could overwhelm Frisco’s “first responders” and emergency services. In such cases, citizens may have to rely on each other for help, such as immediate life saving needs, until first responders arrive.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is an all-risk, all hazard program training people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. CERT members give critical support to first responders in emergencies; provide victim assistance; organize volunteers; and collect disaster information to support “first responder” efforts. |

CERT training classes take place from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. over a nine-week period. Specialized training given during the classes include:
- Disaster preparedness
- Severe weather
- Disaster medical operations
- Patient triage
- Treating life threatening injuries
- Light search and rescue
- Fire suppression
- Team organization
- Terrorism

CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens may be initially unable to receive help following a disaster. CERT volunteers are trained to respond effectively and efficiently without placing themselves in danger.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began promoting the CERT concept nationwide in 1994, using a model created by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Since then, CERT’s have been established in hundreds of communities. The City of Frisco established its CERT with a “pilot” training program in January 2003. |
