Community Emergency Response Team

The Spring 2023 session is now FULL!.  Please refer back to this webpage in January 2024 for information about the next session for CERT.

Our CERT program for spring 2023 will run March 20 - May 8 on Monday evenings, 7-9 p.m., concluding with a mock drill on Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Frisco Fire Department prepares every day for emergencies that may threaten our community. But in the event of a major disaster, the number and type of calls could overwhelm Frisco's first responders and emergency services. In such cases, citizens may have to rely on each other for help, such as immediate life saving needs, until first responders arrive.

CERT
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is an all-risk, all-hazard program training people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations. CERT members give critical support to first responders in emergencies; provide victim assistance; organize volunteers; and collect disaster information to support first responder efforts.

Training

CERT training classes take place from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. over a 8-week period. Specialized training given during the classes includes:

  • Disaster medical operations
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Fire suppression
  • Light search and rescue
  • Patient triage
  • Severe weather
  • Team organization
  • Terrorism
  • Treating life-threatening injuries

CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens may be initially unable to receive professional help following a disaster. CERT volunteers are trained to respond effectively and efficiently without placing themselves in danger.

History
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began promoting the CERT concept nationwide in 1994, using a model created by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Since then, CERTs have been established in hundreds of communities. The city of Frisco established its CERT in 2003.
